What is affiliate marketing?
Affiliate marketing is where you promote someone else’s product or service in return for a commission on any sales. It’s a fantastic way to earn money online because there are virtually zero costs involved in starting an affiliate website.
Amazon is a massive online marketplace full of products across hundreds of categories. Basically if you want to buy something Amazon is likely to sell it. So, for those looking to create a website that promotes a product then Amazon is a great place to turn to.
Amazon wants you to promote their products and they have their own special affiliate dashboard called Amazon Associates to help you do this. Here you can get special tracking links and see commissions generated as well as a host of other administration features. Amazon is not the only business whose products you can promote; in fact it seems like just about every company has an affiliate program that you can work with to earn commissions.
So why is Amazon the best place to start?
Reason #1 why Amazon is the best place to start as an affiliate
Amazon is trusted, and that cannot be overstated. People mindlessly purchase from Amazon, they do not hesitate when completing a purchase because they have likely purchased many things from Amazon before and know they get what they ordered. Even if there were some issues with their previous orders Amazon’s amazing customer service will have probably enhanced their reputation.
Why is this good for affiliates? Our job (as affiliates) is to attract visitors to our website and then filter these visitors through (via a special tracked link) to Amazon’s website. Once there Amazon is more than skilled enough to convert them into sales, rewarding us in the process. If you passed these visitors through to a website they were not as familiar with the likelihood of them buying is significantly reduced.
Reason #2 why Amazon is the best place to start as an affiliate
Amazon sells just about everything so in quite a lot of cases those people you sent to Amazon end up buying not only the thing they click on via your website but additional items too. Once on Amazon they suddenly remember that they need a new Kindle book or that they are camping next week and need a new tent. These are made up examples of course but when you start your Amazon affiliate website you’ll see that this is true. Quite often a few completely unrelated items are purchased all at once, most likely by the same person.
Why is this good for us? Well obviously the more people buy the more commission we get. You get commission on everything purchased by that person and not just the thing they click through on via your website.
Reason #3 why Amazon is the best place to start as an affiliate
Amazon is the king of the upsell. Upselling means that they recommend related items either before or during the buying process. One of the Amazon affiliate websites I run promotes exercise equipment. There have been many times when people have purchased an exercise bike and also a gel saddle. Why? Because Amazon will have recommended it to them. Thanks Amazon, you’ve just made me even more money.
Amazon does this in a couple of different ways. It recommends items that complement the one being purchased and it also shows items other people have viewed or purchased. Basically Amazon makes it tough for people not to buy, which is why it is the superpower it is and the model for any E-commerce website that wants to be successful.
Reason #4 why Amazon is the best place to start as an affiliate
Amazon rewards you for selling more. Your commission level starts at around 4% or 5%, but if you sell a lot you can get up to around the 10% mark. If you are promoting a higher value product this can add up, seriously add up.
Amazon wants to motivate its affiliates because it knows the end result. Motivated people promoting Amazon and its products results in more sales and higher profits. If Amazon needs to encourage its affiliates by dangling higher commissions for more referrals then so be it, it still means more money for them in sales in the long run.
There are more reasons than just these four, but by now I hope you’re more than intrigued. Just to top this list up we can add that Amazon runs fantastic promotions such as Black Friday and other seasonal promotions. Get a website visitor on Amazon when one of these is running and you can expect to see more commissions in your account. Speaking of accounts the dashboard and reporting is great and easy to use. Also Amazon has some great tools and integrates nicely into websites. Again they just want to make it as easy as possible you us affiliates because they know it’s good for their sales.
