In May 2016 the BBQ Amazon affiliate website I created as part of the earn1000.co.uk coaching program made £1089.09. This was a record month at the time, and actually rather disappointingly it is still the record month.
In April 2017 (last month at the time of writing) the BBQ affiliate website made over £700, which was 3 times more than in April 2016. So I was waiting with excitment for May 2017 because I thought there was a chance to get close to £2000 commissions.
But, as you can see by the figure below the commissions for May 2017 were way below my expectations. I ended up generating £590.90 in May 2017, which on any average month I’d be more than happy with, but because May 2016 did so well and last month (April 2017) did so well I had to be disappointed.
The figure above shows May 2017 stats (top) and May 2016 stats (bottom).
Why Were Amazon Affiliate Commissions Down?
The reason why commissions were down are simple. I used to rank on Page 1 of Google for the search term “Best Gas BBQ”. This drove most of the traffic to my website. I am now at the top of Page 2 for this term. The difference between Page 1 and Page 2 is immense. In April I was on Page 1, my commissions were 3X compared to 2016, in May I was on Page 2, commission were 1/2 compared to 2016.
What can I do about it. Well it is pretty simple. I need to get back on Page 1 for this search term and also rank better for other search terms.
With this in mind I am in the process of updating and upgrading my BBQ Amazon affiliate website. I am working through a major On-Page SEO audit of this BBQ website, which I will also run out over my other affiliate websites in due course.
This is taking a little longer than expected because I am writing up a detailed article (with videos) that is recording and presenting everything that I am updating (and why). This will form a comprehensive blueprint for me and you to follow to update and improve affiliate websites for better On-Page SEO.
I’ll keep you updated when this On-Page SEO article is published, but for now I need to work through updating my content on my BBQ affiliate website and see what effects these have.
Cheers
Neil
